When Short-Run Printing Makes Sense

Posted: 28 May 2014 04:30 AM PDT

One great way to increase your print marketing return on investment is to print as many postcards, brochures and other marketing materials as you'll use in a single run. That's because the greater your print volume, the less your price-per-piece. The savings can be dramatic, especially for large runs. However, there are times when short-run printing makes more sense. The following lists occasions when short-run printing not only makes sense, but is the best option for print marketing.

1.  Test runs

If you want to maximize your direct-mail marketing return on investment, it's a good idea to test multiple versions of your postcards, sales letters and other mailers to identify which yields the greatest response rate before you commit to a larger campaign. Short-run printing allows you to print a few hundred copies of each version for testing purposes; once you pick a winner, you can move to printing larger runs.

2.  Limited promotions

Similarly, if you're promoting a product, service, or event to a small geographic area or a small demographic segment, short-run printing could prove to be the most economical way to print postcards, posters and flyers needed to make your promotion effective.

3.  Continual changes

Some companies continually change their core marketing materials, such as adding new specials to sales sheets and holiday deals to brochures. If your marketing materials are subject to frequent changes, short-run printing is the best solution for making continual changes economically.

4.  Custom printing

If you design custom, personalized pieces for your clients – such as art prints or letterhead samples, for example – then short-run printing is the best way to print just a few pieces at a time and for a limited market. Some clients only need a few printed pieces, which makes short-run printing the most affordable option.

5.  Limited budget

Finally, if your business doesn't have the budget to purchase all the letterhead, envelopes, brochures, business cards and other marketing materials it needs for the year all at once, short-run printing provides an affordable alternative that will help keep you in business so you can earn greater profits.

Short-run printing has been a game-changer for small businesses who at one time could not afford to print with the "big boys" of their industries; now, however, the playing field has been leveled because even the smallest companies can launch high-quality, profitable marketing campaigns via short-run printing.

Customer Appreciation Art Contest Grand Prize Winner – Zak Wilson

Posted: 27 May 2014 09:48 AM PDT

While brainstorming about how to celebrate April's Customer Appreciation Month, your PsPrint employees realized that all year long, you're ordering posters, flyers, postcards and more with some amazing design. So we decided a fun contest would be customers submitting their best orders – fun for us, because we got to look at all the great artwork. It was tough to pick just one best piece among the contest entries, but we agreed that the poster by customer Zak Wilson, for which he provided art direction for illustrator Samuel Ho, had it all: amazing artwork, originality and just eye-popping design:

Wilson and Ho first collaborated on a series of posters for the band Goblin last year.

"His work really fit the vibe and style I was looking for," says Wilson, who served as art director, with Ho illustrating. "Turned out not only was he an amazing artist but a cool guy that was easy to work with."

That partnership led to Ho and Wilson working on posters for Black Sabbath, Slayer and Goblin again.

"When he [Wilson] brought me the opportunity to do a gig piece for Sabbath, how could I say no?" asks Ho.

The idea for the PsPrint-winning Black Sabbath poster was to do an updated take on the pilot from the “Never Say Die” album, says Wilson.

"I brought the idea and some rough mocks to Samuel, and he nailed the pilot art on the first go-around," Wilson says.

Initially, it was a small-run commemorative poster for Black Sabbath's show in Irvine, Calif. Afterward, Wilson sent some of the posters to BS Productions, which ended up buying the design from Wilson and Ho – it now represents Black Sabbath's worldwide 2014 tour and has been printed on posters, tickets, shirts and more.

"It’s even been bootlegged!" Wilson says.

Both Wilson and Ho say they hope to continue working on music-related design projects.

"Working for bands I like is the most gratifying," says Wilson. "Van Halen would top that list. An album cover or concert poster for them would be a check-off on the bucket list."

In the meantime, Wilson – who "logged many years" at Tower Records in Berkeley, making large-format displays and signage to promote new-music releases – keeps a day job at Amoeba Records while also doing graphic design work based in the music industry, particularly in the field of concert posters.

Meanwhile, Ho is busy working with ESPN doing editorial illustrations for the NBA and NHL playoffs. He's also involved in gallery shows and doing some work with Marvel.

"He’s in very high demand," Wilson says of Ho. "I always feel lucky and honored when I can work with him on a project."

PsPrint looks forward to seeing what Ho and Wilson collaborate on in the future.

"PsPrint makes a quality product for a reasonable price and allows one to order small quantities," Wilson says. "These three things have been paramount in my creating a large body of work in the concert-poster field."

Take a look at just a sample of posters Wilson has printed at PsPrint:

7 Secrets To Summer Marketing

Posted: 27 May 2014 05:00 AM PDT

Do sales slow during the summer? If so, you need to fine-tune your summer marketing plan to take advantage of seasonal opportunities. If you experience the opposite in summer – a thriving business when the weather warms – you have to learn how to best your competitors and attract the most customers in order to maximize your summer marketing return on investment. No matter how your business traditionally fares during the summer months, you can achieve even greater success with the following seven secrets to summer marketing.

1.  Analyze and adjust

Start by analyzing your historical summer marketing efforts and results. Identify whether your sales increase or decrease during the summer, then figure out why. This exercise can help you take advantage of previously undiscovered opportunities to promote your business in the summer. Make adjustments to your summer marketing plan as needed.

2.  Get outdoors

Summertime is outdoor time, so it's a good idea to take your marketing outdoors in order to reach customers in their natural environments. Posters, flyers, vinyl banners and stickers are all cost-effective marketing tools for outdoor summer marketing; plus, they can be distributed in the places your customers are known to frequent.

PsPrint features a variety of summer-themed designs that can be easily personalized for your business, product or event.

3.  Market at relevant events

Do your customers love rock concerts? Get a vinyl banner in a prominent location. Does the local minor league baseball team command a loyal following from your customer base? Sponsor a special night at the ballpark. Do your customers attend B2B trade shows during the summer? Better get a booth and print plenty of business cards, brochures, booklets and other takeaways. Earn status points with your customer base by being omnipresent at relevant events.

4.  Go big, be bold, have fun

Get ultra-creative with your marketing to attract the most attention for your brand and stick in customers' minds until it's time to buy. One of my favorite summer marketing campaigns was for San Francisco Zoo, which placed "giraffe neck" stickers on local utility poles to promote its exhibits.

5.  Market on-the-go

Car stickers, window stickers, car door magnets and even bumper stickers help market your brand everywhere you go – which means you can put your company in front of potentially millions of commuting and vacationing customers if you spend a lot of time on the road.

Car door magnets are a great way to turn your car into a mobile ad this summer.

6.  Host your own event

Another one of my favorite summer marketing strategies is for a local insurance agency that wants to target motorcycle riders. The company annually hosts a motorcycle cruise-in in its parking lot. The cruise-in lasts an afternoon and features a band, free burgers and hot dogs, free branded shirts, and a "best bike" award. It draws several hundred riders every year, and no one leaves without the insurance company's motorcycle insurance brochure.

7.  Partner with others

Finally, seek out companies who overlap your customers but do not directly compete with you to see if you can develop a package that presents customers with a discount yet benefits all business partners in terms of both profits and market reach. A day spa might partner with a restaurant and a movie theater, for example, to offer a romantic couples anniversary package.

Why Rack Cards Are Perfect Summer Marketing Tools

Posted: 26 May 2014 05:00 AM PDT

If you're planning your summer marketing strategy, you've probably considered everything from direct-mail postcards to outdoor marketing such as banners, posters and flyers. All of these make excellent summer marketing tools, but have you considered how rack cards can help you promote your company this summer? Whether you operate a travel and tourism-related business or an enterprise that serves local customers, rack cards can be powerful marketing tools when the weather warms. The following lists five reasons why rack cards are perfect summer marketing tools.

Tourist Info Rack Solar Panel Flickr - Photo Sharing! - Google Chrome_2014-05-15_09-10-49-Optimized

1.  Versatile placement

Rack cards aren't just for visitor's centers; they can be placed in many locations including restaurants, hotels, retail locations, service locations (such as mechanic garages), in public areas, event venues and just about anywhere else. The key to successful rack card placement lies in finding relevance; thus, a putt-putt golf course might place rack cards in an arcade, while a synthetic oil brand might place rack cards in a mechanic garage. Distribute rack cards where your customers are, and you will get noticed.

2.  Rack cards are easy to carry

Unlike banners and even flyers, rack cards are small enough for customers to easily pick up and carry with them. They offer instant take-aways from almost any location, so customers aren't forced to remember your phone number, URL or even your business name – they have it in their pocket already.

3.  Rack cards are roomy

Despite their relatively small size, rack cards are still plenty big enough to communicate your message thoroughly. You can print rack cards that feature large headlines, bullet points with benefits, calls to action, perforated coupons, large photos, menus, hours of operation and any other information you want to include.

4.  Your competitors aren't printing rack cards

In many cases, your biggest competitors are missing the boat when it comes to rack cards. That fact gives you a unique opportunity to reach customers without distraction and make the most of your rack card marketing. If you can reach customers in a powerful way your competitors aren't, you should always take advantage of the situation.

5.  Rack cards are cheap

Rack cards are super cheap to print and distribute, and they still look great in full color. That means rack cards are perfect summer marketing tools that carry potentially-high return on investment.

Which Sports Team Most Needs A Uniform Redesign?

Posted: 23 May 2014 05:00 AM PDT

Uniform redesigns make headlines now more than ever, in part because teams change uniforms more frequently and in part because many teams are opting to move away from traditional designs to adopt radical new styles. Plus, uniform design is a serious business: the Cleveland Browns, for example, are halfway through an NFL-mandated two-year uniform redesign process.

Some of my favorite uniform makeovers come in the form of alternative jerseys, which are sort of just for fun; other redesigns rebrand an entire franchise. Is it a coincidence the New England Patriots went from uniforms that looked like this:

Tom Brady Flickr - Photo Sharing! - Google Chrome_2014-05-01_09-28-26

to this:

Tom Brady Flickr - Photo Sharing! - Google Chrome_2014-05-01_09-29-51

Photo credit Keith Allison via Flickr Creative Commons license

and then proceeded to rise from the basement to become one of the most dominant teams in the NFL? I think not.

College teams get more redesigns than professional teams; the process must be easier and guidelines less strict. Check out these awesome Missouri Tiger uniforms:

12. Missouri Tigers - Google Chrome_2014-05-01_09-47-07

Or how about these Baylor basketball jerseys:

14. Baylor Basketball - Google Chrome_2014-05-01_09-48-42

And the Toronto Blue Jays began sporting a variety of different uniforms in 2012:

Uniforms Toronto Blue Jays Fans - Google Chrome_2014-05-01_09-53-40

Several graphic designers have created mock uniform redesigns as well, though they haven't been adopted by any teams. Mr. Design Junkie, for example, made waves with his uniform redesigns for all 32 NFL teams:

Mr. Design Junkie All 32 NFL Team's Uniforms Redesigned - Google Chrome_2014-05-01_09-44-12

Graphic designer Jesse Alkire did the same:

All 32 NFL Team Uniforms Were Redesigned AGAIN, This Time by a Talented Designer_2014-05-01_09-56-23

While some teams routinely adopt cutting-edge design into their uniforms, other teams leave their fans clamoring for redesigns. Several media outlets have even created lists of the ugliest sports uniforms ever.

Thus, my question to you is, which team, in any professional or college sport, most desperately needs a uniform redesign? Share your opinion in the comments!

PsPrint in Oakland, Calif., has a new neighbor. Know how I found out about this? I was driving down Mandela Parkway and noticed a poster outside the just-opened Kilovolt Coffee. Print marketing works, y'all! Another new business, CrossFit Shatter, opened this past month in Albany, N.Y., and it's handing out eye-catching stickers to members who will, ideally, plaster them onto their cars, bicycles, cubicle walls – anywhere another potential new gym member will take notice.

What's your next printing project going to be? Find inspiration among PsPrint customers' latest orders, including flyers, invitations, greeting cards, postcards, stickers and posters.

Why You Must Update Your Letterhead

Posted: 22 May 2014 05:00 AM PDT

medium_475818817-Optimized

photo credit: scottroberts via photopin cc

Letterhead can be a formidable branding tool that has more influence on purchasing decisions than many businesses give it credit for. Sales letters and other communications printed on letterhead carry more weight with customers, and help impart the idea that your company is strong and credible. These traits lend themselves to buyer confidence. Still, letterhead is often overlooked when it comes to annual marketing planning; however, if you take the time to consider what impact your letterhead has on your customers, chances are you'll identify ways you can update your letterhead and motivate greater response rates. The following lists reasons why you must update your letterhead.

1.  Brand consistency

Many companies have revamped their logos in recent years, and if you've similarly made a change in your logo – flat design, a different color hue, or modern wordmark – you need to likewise update your letterhead to reflect your brand image. It's important to keep your brand image consistent across all communication and marketing channels in order for customers to more readily recognize your company.

2.  Mobile opportunities

If your company employs QR codes, augmented reality, mobile apps or other mobile technology to help promote your products and services, you should incorporate it into your letterhead so customers can easily learn more about you or respond to calls to action via their mobile devices.

3.  Social opportunities

Does your letterhead prominently display your Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram, Vine and other social media addresses? If not, you're missing opportunities to connect with customers via their preferred mediums – those they use every day.

4.  Direct sales opportunities

Aside from sales letters, most marketers don't think of letterhead as a direct sales tool. But letterhead isn't just for communication alone. In fact, it can be a powerful sales tool. Consider adding time-limited special offers, coupons and other incentives to your letterhead. You can place these in a sidebar or footer. If you want to change your offer up from time to time, simply design a promotional area and type special offers in when you draft letters.

5.  Gain a competitive edge

Speaking of sidebars and footers, these tools also represent unique opportunities to gain a competitive edge by showcasing the benefits of buying from your company, customer testimonials, product and service lists, and the reasons why you're different from your competitors.

If your letterhead doesn't incorporate all of these elements, you're missing potential sales opportunities. Evaluate your letterhead today to identify ways you can print more powerful letterhead.
