One of the reasons many small business owners give for going into business for themselves in the first place is the freedom to enjoy time with family and friends. The Christmas break is perhaps the best annual opportunity for taking free time; however, many business owners spend it working more. This is especially true for retail businesses that thrive on holiday sales; however, tending to your business should not make it impossible to join in the holiday festivities. In fact, if you're a small business it's important for you to slow down and recharge over Christmas break. Here's why.

It's good for your health

Taking a break helps reduce stress, which damages your vital organs and can contribute to sleep disorders, disease and even premature death. Spending time with people you love to be around has a positive impact, not only by removing you from stressful situations but also by making you laugh and smile – which have been shown to have positive effects on health.

It's good for your business

It's funny how we seem to champion those people who constantly have their noses to the grindstone, when science says people who routinely take extended breaks are more creative, more efficient and more productive. Not only should you take several breaks throughout the work day, you should also take several days off at a time. Christmas break provides the perfect opportunity.

Taking a break isn't just about leisure; it also helps you grow and your business grow. When you take a step back it's easier to put your business in perspective, define your goals, and objectively state whether you're on the path to achieve them. If you're not, Christmas break is a great time for brainstorming how to get there.

It's what you really want

Why are you putting long hours in to make your business a success? Because you like working all the time? Hardly. Money? Doubtful, given you don't have time to spend it. Freedom? Yep, and that's why you need to take Christmas break for "you" time. It's what you really want, after all, and one of the major reasons you do what you do every day of the year.

When you take an extended break, you can recharge your body and your mind while enjoying the fruits of your efforts. When you return in the New Year, you'll be better prepared to tackle challenges, have a plan in place for achieving success, and be better-equipped for making important decisions efficiently, productively and creatively.
