Posters, posters and more posters

Posted: 29 Aug 2014 07:00 AM PDT

When it comes to printing, we’ve got it all. We have more than 40 printed products at PsPrint, including business cards, postcards, brochures, stickers, catalogs, magnets – now we even have wine and bottle labels. Plus, we have some new and extremely exciting products that are launching next week, so be on the lookout for that!

Of course, all of our products are great, but you knew I would say that, right? Probably one of the most visually striking printed products we offer is posters. See for yourself! Check out all the entries into our Movie Poster Design Contest.

A big, colorful poster is a great way to get attention. Posters level the playing field regardless of budget because with the right distribution strategy, you can reach just as many potential customers as the big players in your industry.  Obviously, our customers think posters are awesome, too, because we see a lot of amazing posters roll off our printing presses. Here are a few of our favorites this week:

EDDM Postcards vs. Targeted Postcards

Any marketer worth their salt knows a high-quality mailing list is critical to direct-mail postcard marketing success. A great offer alone will not make your postcard marketing campaign successful; rather, you need to be able to get your offer in front of customers who are most likely to buy. Two ways to generate mailing lists are via the Post Office's EDDM (Every Door Direct Mail) service and by generating your own mailing list according to predefined demographic traits. The following examines the differences between each strategy so you can make an intelligent decision and maximize your postcard marketing return on investment and profits.

We'll start by tackling the major difference between EDDM and demographically targeted postcards: targeting. When you generate your own mailing list, you can choose recipients based on many different demographics: age, gender, geographic location, income, purchasing habits and more.

EDDM postcards, however, are true to their name in that they're distributed to every door within a defined area – typically by zip code or city/state. You can choose to send EDDM postcards to residential addresses, commercial addresses or both, but outside of geographic location that's the extent of your targeting allowance.

With demographically targeted mailing lists, you're only limited by the number of people who match your target demographics. EDDM mailings are limited to 5,000 pieces per campaign; however, you can launch multiple campaigns to reach a larger audience.

EDDM postcard mailing tends to be marginally cheaper due to lower postage rates, but the additional cost of demographically targeted postage is largely negligible when you consider an expected return. Both types of postcard marketing campaigns are capable of earning excellent response rates, given well-targeted messages and attractive offers.

So, which type of postcard marketing campaign should you launch? Demographically targeted campaigns are best-suited for companies that have selective customers within niche markets. EDDM campaigns are well-suited to businesses whose products and services everyone has a need for, particularly within local markets.

So, a financial adviser who wants to promote its 529 college savings plan might be best off choosing a demographically targeted mailing list so they can send postcards only to those who have young children. A residential HVAC contractor who wants to promote central air units, on the other hand, might be better off sending EDDM postcards to residents who live in its local zip code. Not everyone has a use for college savings, but nearly everyone wants reliable air conditioning.

If you're considering a postcard marketing campaign, determine what level of targeting you need. If you need to reach a selective audience, a demographically targeted mailing list is your best bet. If you want to reach everyone in your local area, go with EDDM.

30 Phone Calls Entrepreneurs Should Make This Year

Posted: 28 Aug 2014 05:00 AM PDT

Free Photo Man, Telephoning, Making Phone Call - Free Image on Pixabay - 240910_2014-07-27_09-09-33-Optimized

Being a successful entrepreneur means consistently being on top of your game and constantly striving for improvement. However, when life becomes incredibly busy with day-to-day operations, it can be easy to miss opportunities to reach new customers, improve your products and services, and increase profits. The good news is that just taking 10 minutes or so every week to make a phone call or two can ultimately have a significant impact on your bottom line, your brand, your perceived quality, and, of course, your profits. To that end, here are 30 phone calls entrepreneurs should make this year.

1.  Customers

What better way to learn how to improve your products and services – as well as what you're doing right – than by calling your customers? Having candid conversations with your best customers will not only yield good ideas, it will also help build customer relationships and foster long-term customer loyalty.

2.  Insurance companies

Are you getting the best prices on insurance? The best service? Evaluating your insurance costs annually can help identify savings that improve your bottom line.

3.  Accountant/bookkeeper

See if there are any practices you can adopt to take advantage of new tax breaks and make sure you're on track to keep up with taxes owed. Identify any process inefficiencies that can save money.

4.  Web designer/web consultant

See if your web guru can suggest ways to increase conversion rates, attract more leads, and deliver a more compelling web presence. Technology is constantly evolving, so you need to evolve along with it.

5.  Digital marketing consultant

Call a digital marketing consultant for online marketing strategies not covered by your website: as placement, email newsletters and more.

6.  Printing company

Shop around to make sure you're getting the best value for your print marketing materials (premium quality at a fair price). It's also a good idea to consult your printing company for marketing ideas – they get to see what types of materials companies are printing repetitively, so they know what works. Some printing companies can increase your efficiency by handling design, printing, mailing list creation, addressing and even mailing via their own Indicia.

7.  Attorney

Have your attorney review your contract forms and policies to make sure you're not only conducting business legally, but that you're protected against unforeseen circumstances.

8.  Print ad placement specialist

Consult a specialist to determine the best places to distribute print ads as well as which publications (both online and off) you should be advertising in to reach your target audience.

9.  Virtual assistant

Hiring a virtual assistant will allow you to delegate menial, time-consuming tasks and free yourself to work on growing your business.

10.  Google

If you invest in PPC ads, Google's own experts are happy to help you optimize your ads for success. Who would know how to do it better?

11.  Marketing partners

Call potential marketing partners to see if you can develop a cross-promotion that benefits each partner as well as their customers.

12.  Suppliers

Contact your product suppliers to see if there is a way to increase supply chain efficiency and to check for new products and opportunities.

13.  Post office/shipping services

A phone call placed to your local post office and shipping services such as UPS and FedEx can help you save money and mail/ship more efficiently.

14.  Mentor

Who is your business mentor? When was the last time you talked to them? Call to give them an update on your business and to seek insight for growth and problem-solving.

15.  Coach

Similarly, you should take the time to speak with your business/career/life coach to help put the world in perspective and ensure you're on track with your goals.

16.  Gym

If you don't have a gym membership, get one. If you do, use it. Call to schedule classes or other gym time. The better you care for your body, the more efficiently you will operate.

17.  Radio station

Find out what advertising and partnership opportunities exist with your local radio station.

Free Photo Girl, Headphones, Music - Free Image on Pixabay - 140569 - Google Ch_2014-07-27_09-09-53-Optimized

18.  TV station

Local TV advertising probably isn't as expensive as you think it is, and it can help you get the word out to tens of thousands of people. Make a phone call to see what opportunities your local station offers for small businesses.

19.  Promotional products provider

Help brand your business by ordering shirts, pens, USB drives, and other products bearing your company name and logo for trade shows and fundraiser door prizes.

20.  Advisory board

If you don't have an advisory board, get one; if you do, talk to your board members. Even the smallest businesses can benefit from building an advisory board of three to five trusted and experienced entrepreneurs.

21.  Office supplier

Seek cost-saving measures from your office supply company; some will deliver for free if you order regularly or in bulk, for example.

22.  Social media expert

Is your Facebook presence building customer relationships and driving customers to your company? A social media expert can help you take advantage of both free and paid methods to help your business reputation thrive.

23.  Contractors

Delegate/outsource everything you can in order to save money on tasks you don't need to perform yourself. The time savings alone can help you boost profits, and you can still bill your hourly rate for contracted work – creating a built-in profit margin.

Free Photo Construction, Building, Window - Free Image on Pixabay - 370583 - Go_2014-07-27_09-09-58-Optimized

24.  Chamber of Commerce

Many Chambers of Commerce offer unique small business benefits, such as money-saving group insurance plans.

25.  Competitors

Conduct some light espionage of your own and keep tabs on your competitors by calling them to find out what their products, services, rates and policies are.

26.  SBA

The SBA offers free access to advisers who can help you plan for business success.

27.  SCORE

SCORE will match you with a free mentor to help you make the best business decisions. It's free expert advice, and it's free to listen – why would you pass this up?

28.  Spouse and children

Don't forget why you're working so hard – make sure your spouse and children know you're thinking of them, and plan family time whenever possible. You'll be happier and more productive when you are working.

29.  Friends

Similarly, schedule time with friends to enjoy the best of what life has to offer. Know what you're working for so you can enjoy life when you're not working.

30.  Hotel

Schedule time to get away. Vacations have been proven to improve entrepreneur happiness, efficiency and productivity. Avoid burnout and take some much-deserved time off.

Now it's your turn: What other phone calls should entrepreneurs make? Why?

Business Card Hack: How To Make Customers Keep ‘Em

Posted: 27 Aug 2014 05:00 AM PDT

Free Photo Gummi Bears, Packed, Business Cards - Free Image on Pixabay - 318417_2014-08-04_11-50-16-Optimized

Business cards are staple print marketing and business networking tools; however, many professionals give little consideration to their business cards outside of making sure their contact information is correct. The problem with this lack of strategy is their business cards are unremarkable, destined for the recycle bin or to be otherwise forgotten. If you want your business card to help market for you long after you've handed it out, you need to make it remarkable – and that's the topic of this business card hack: how to make customers keep 'em.

So, how do you make your customers keep your business card? Simple: make it useful. Useful business cards that have value for your target customer base are highly likely to be kept on-hand. The only real question you have to answer is how to make your business cards useful to your customers. That, of course, depends on who you're selling to.

Here are some ideas for your inspiration:

  • a mechanic's business card that includes a typical maintenance schedule that will help keep a car running and valuable
  • a wedding planner's business card that features a wedding reception checklist
  • a local sporting good store's business card that includes a local sports team schedule on the back
  • a pizzeria manager's business card that features a mini-menu on the back
  • an accountant's business card that includes a list of commonly missed tax write-offs
  • a hair stylist's business card that features a discount program on the back – a free style every tenth session, for example

All of these examples provide usefulness to each respective businesses' customers; in addition, that value is relevant to the business itself. The message of such business cards is clear: if a business card can have this much value, think of how much value the person behind it can add to one's life.

If you want potential customers to hang on to your business card – and subsequently notice and remember you – you need to print business cards that are useful. Do it right, and you'll be the first person they call when they're ready to buy what you sell.

Why EDDM Postcards Are Perfect For Local Marketing

Image captured from the USPS EDDM Route Tool

If your small business focuses almost exclusively on local customers EDDM postcards are perfect marketing tools for promoting your products and services. The following details why EDDM (Every Door Direct Mail) postcards are perfect for local marketing.

EDDM postcards are delivered to every address

When your business depends on local customers, it's critical to ensure every resident or business knows who you are, what you do, and what your unique selling points are. EDDM postcards are delivered to every address within a defined locality, so you can be certain your message is seen.

EDDM postcards can target businesses, residents or both

If your business is exclusively B2B or B2C, EDDM postcards let you target only business or residential addresses, respectively. If you target everyone, you can send EDDM postcards to both business and residential addresses. Moreover, EDDM postcards can deliver extremely targeted messages because you can send low-volume campaigns of just a few hundred postcards. This allows you to take advantage of local images, words and phrases to command attention.

EDDM postcards offer excellent postage rates

Since post offices do not have to sort your postcards according to a typical mailing list, EDDM postcard postage rates are relatively low. Thus, you can send highly targeted postcards at affordable prices – especially since EDDM postcard printing is likewise affordable.

EDDM postcards offer options that allow you to stand out

A great offer is critical to direct-mail success, but getting noticed is the first step. EDDM postcard printing gives you options that can help you stand out from competitors at the mailbox, starting with a choice of six EDDM-compliant postcard sizes ranging from 6.5-inch by 9-inch to 8.5-inch by 14-inch. You can choose between full color and black and white printing. Paper stock choices, which can directly influence how your company is perceived, include gloss, matte, and velvet covers in varying thicknesses up to 16-point. Finally, you can have your EDDM postcards placed in 100-piece bundles for easy postcard delivery.

Every Door Direct Mail postcards were designed specifically to help small businesses connect with local customers with affordable, yet powerful, marketing campaigns. If you want to give your small business a boost, it's time to launch your first EDDM postcard marketing campaign.

5 Cool Careers For Designers

Posted: 25 Aug 2014 05:00 AM PDT

Many graphic designers focus on designing for the web or on print marketing materials such as business cards and flyers. Such design careers can definitely be lucrative and exciting, but the field of design certainly isn't limited to the print and digital marketing worlds. Nearly everything you see and touch was conceived by a designer. If you're thinking about making a change in your design career or want to add a new service to your existing stable, consider the following five cool careers for designers.

1.  Swimming pool designer

Think all swimming pools are rectangles? Think again. Swimming pool design is primed for growth as more and more people are finding unique ways to incorporate swimming pools into their backyards. Everything from well-landscaped natural pools to at-home lazy rivers to creatively-shaped pools are borne from design. Swimming pool design is the type of niche that doesn't have a ton of competition, yet each project is well-compensated.

2.  Industrial design

A fuse of design and engineering, industrial design has nothing to do with designing factories and everything to do with developing and improving products. Everything from golf clubs to shoes to coffee makers and more typically fall under the auspices of an industrial designer. If you want your design to improve the user experience, consider a career in industrial design.

3.  Eyewear design

Eyewear design is another field in which you can express your unique sense of creativity to impact everyday life. Sunglasses, reading glasses and corrective glasses all need frame designers; moreover, the burgeoning wearables market (think Google Glass) should present plenty of opportunities for eyewear design.

4.  Custom motorcycle design

Motorcycles are enjoying enormous popularity in contemporary times, but most motorcycle manufacturers offer limited color options for new models. Everyone wants their motorcycle to be their own machine, which makes custom motorcycle painting a hot profession. This is an industry in which it's easy to set yourself apart from your competition and quickly make a name for yourself simply by crafting your own incredible designs. Best of all? Custom artwork is often lucrative.

5.  Custom guitar design

If you'd rather rock than roll, you can put your design skills to good use designing custom guitars. Everything from the shape to the material to the hardware and, of course, paint design is a factor, so you can design thousands of custom guitars without ever repeating your work – or getting bored.

Judging Wine By Its Label Is Good For Business

Posted: 22 Aug 2014 05:00 AM PDT

Free Photo Bottle, Beverage, Wine - Free Image on Pixabay - 50573 - Google Chro_2014-08-01_15-52-35-Optimized

They say you should never judge a book by its cover, and by that same notion one might say you should never judge wine by its label. Certainly, the label design and the quality of the label printing have nothing to do with the quality of the wine inside the bottle – or do they?

Consider that the vast majority of people are not oenophiles – how do you think, then, most people pick a wine to take home from the supermarket? The label. The fact is, no matter how much importance a connoisseur might put on a specific style or vintage, the label is going to have far more to do with sales than anything else.

"Sure," you think, "those with untrained palettes and those who lack appreciation for fine wine might be fooled; but a true connoisseur knows better."

Think again. In a study in which professional wine tasters were presented with the same exact wine bearing two different labels – one claiming to be a superior wine, the other a run-of-the-mill table wine – the tasters overwhelmingly applauded the "superior" wine while finding fault in the "inferior" wine. You see, the label not only affects purchasing decisions, it also influences how the wine itself is perceived!

When it comes to marketing, perception is absolutely critical to success. In fact, perception rules business: the better a company, brand, product or service is perceived, the greater its chance of success. It doesn't matter if another company is actually better – what matters is what people think.

The same goes for wine: it doesn't matter how good your wine is. If you want it to be a commercial success, you need to influence its perception. And that starts with printing a great label. You don't have to like it. You don't even have to agree with your customers. But you do have to understand that your customers are in charge of your success, and they do indeed judge wine by its label.

Judging wine by its label is good for business, and knowing customers do it presents an incredible opportunity for you to boost sales: simply print attention-getting labels that give your wine a premium aura, and you're well on your way to achieving success no matter the vintage.

What’s Your Best Marketing Tool?

Posted: 21 Aug 2014 05:00 AM PDT

Free Photo Posters Pasted On Posters - Free Image on Pixabay - 215609 - Google _2014-08-01_15-25-25-Optimized

What's your best marketing tool? Is it your business card? Your website? Your Facebook page? Your winning smile? Do you even know? If not, you should: knowing which of your marketing tools performs best will help you market more efficiently. It will also help you expand your marketing and sales into related areas to foster business growth.

For some, it's easy: the best marketing tool for a mail-order catalog company, obviously, is its catalog. In that, that might be the company's only marketing tool. For others, however, determining your best marketing tool isn't as cut-and-dry.

Consider a small business that prints business cards, distributes banners, sends direct-mail postcards, has a website, sends email blasts, and works its Facebook page. The business can measure the response and conversion rates for some of these marketing tools; the impact of others is difficult to quantify. A direct-mail postcard might be a reliable profit-maker, but a clever business card given face-to-face might actually yield better customers.

Determining what your best marketing tool is might depend on how you define "best." To some, "best" might mean the marketing tool that generates the greatest immediate return on investment. To others, "best" might be the marketing tool that helps them land long-term loyal clients. Some might consider their best marketing tool to be the one that provides reliable results, if not the greatest potential return on investment.

At the end of the day, all marketing tools compliment each other; savvy marketers know that spreading a message across multiple marketing channels is the best way to get the word out. Customers who are exposed to your message in several different mediums are more likely to buy than those exposed to the message in one medium alone, even with repetition.

Still, many businesses have their tried-and-true, the one marketing tool they know they can trust, their go-to. With that in mind, it's your turn to weigh in: how do you define "best," and what is your best marketing tool? Why? Let us know in the comments!

Best Landing Page Builder: Unbounce Vs. Instapage

Posted: 20 Aug 2014 05:00 AM PDT

One of my recent blog posts stirred a bit of debate over which service offers the best landing page creation and optimization experience: Unbounce or Instapage? To settle the debate once and for all (or, at the very least, offer my updated opinion, since I had never tried one of the services), I put the two services head-to-head. The following presents my observations as I compared the two services and presents a final verdict on which I prefer.

Getting started

Starting free trials on both Unbounce and Instapage was quick and easy – on both sites. I just input some basic information, and I was off to the landing page editors.

Templates

Both editors prompted me to pick a template or select a blank page. I chose templates, because we're looking for the easiest path to a great landing page, right? Both services offered well-designed landing page templates, though I found Instapage's templates to be somewhat more visually interesting – perhaps in part because several Unbounce templates are light and dark versions of one another and Instapage seemed to have a larger variety of styles. Still, Unbouce boasts more than 80 templates to Instapage's 60-plus, and additional Unbounce themes can be purchased from Theme Forest.  The templates I selected were similar in layout, colors and purpose.

Unbounce

Instapage

Education and support

Unbounce offers an introduction video that shows you how to use the landing page editor; Instapage uses a pop-up tour. Both offer "help" or "support" buttons for easy access to documentation, tours, forums and customer support.

Editor

At first glance, the Unbounce editor is loaded with features for customization. In fact, the interface might be somewhat overwhelming for those who want to build landing pages fast. However, many of the settings do not need to be touched – they're there for convenient customization, but I didn't need to mess with anything in the right sidebar.

Instapage's editor is clean and simple; new elements can be added from the top drop-down menus (as opposed to the left sidebar in Unbounce), and customization options aren't as evident – though you can add your own HTML and CSS if you'd like.

Instapage

Unbounce features a built-in WYSIWYG editor for text, images and video. So does Instapage, though it has fewer controls. Unbounce has combined video/photo fields, while Instapage has separate elements dedicated to adding each respective media type. Both have easy-to-use drag 'n drop interfaces for text, photos, videos and buttons.

You can also quickly add new variations to both for A/B split testing and multivariate testing.

Publishing

Once I was satisfied with my landing pages, all I had to do was click a couple of buttons on each service to publish my landing pages (I didn't take them live). Both services allow for custom domains, so they appear to be hosted on your own server.

Analytics

Instapage features an analytics button to make it easy to track landing page performance with Google Analytics. To do the same on Unbounce you have to insert the Google Analytics code into the JavaScript box near the bottom left of the editor.

Mobile/responsive

Both Instapage and Unbounce offer responsive templates for mobile devices. You have to build these as separate variations and set them as your mobile templates. The process is easy, it would be nice if each template already had a mobile-ready template in addition to several variations that could be deployed after designing or laying out the initial landing page.

Integrations and marketing automation

Both Unbounce and Instapage both offer lots of integration with third-party services such as Mail Chimp, Aweber and Salesforce. In essence, both create outstanding lead generation launch pads.  One advantage Instapage has over Unbounce is its WordPress plugin, which lets you deploy your landing page right from your WordPress dashboard. Unbounce doesn't offer a dedicated WordPress plugin, but Zapier provides a way to connect the two services.

Overall ease-of-use

Both Unbounce and Instapage are incredibly easy to use, but I have to give the nod to Instapage for its clean interface. Instapage does allow for advanced customization, but custom features are easier to find, use and deploy via Unbounce.

Pricing

Instapage costs less than Unbounce, with the biggest differences in features being Unbounce's dynamic text replacement (for keyword-driven searches) and Instapage's WordPress plugin. Other than free trials and "starter" plans, both services offer three comparable tiers; they each offer up to 5,000 monthly visits in the first tier and up to 25,000 visitors in the second tier. Unbounce offers up to 100,000 visits per month for its third tier, though Instapage's third tier offers  unlimited monthly visits. Across the board, Instapage's plans are $20 cheaper than comparable Unbounce plans.

The verdict

In my original post – the one that sparked this debate – I named Unbounce the best landing page optimization tool. In terms of usability, we have a draw; though each service has its own nuances, they're both exceedingly easy to use and customize. In terms of features, it just depends what you want: if dynamic text replacement is critical, Unbounce is the answer; however, if you want to implement your landing page with WordPress, Instapage makes it fast.

Outside of a few key differences in utility and features, the services are very similar, and it's difficult to pick a clear "winner." However, money talks, and the fact that Instapage will save most users $20 per month ($240 annually) means I'm selecting Instapage as the best landing page optimization tool on the market today.

It's worth noting that none of this testing has to do with actual conversion rates – the only things that really matter when it comes to landing pages. If I could prove that one of the service's templates outperformed the other's, I would name that service the winner regardless of price. At the end of the day, both Unbounce and Instapage seem to give marketers powerful landing page building and optimization tools that will far out-earn each respective investment. Any marketing investment you can make that boost profits is a good investment in my book.

Now, it's your turn: do you prefer Unbounce or Instapage? A different service? Tell me why in the comments!
