It’s Not Too Late For Calendar Marketing

Calendar marketing is a great way to keep your brand in front of customers 365 days a year, and calendars can even generate direct sales with strategically placed coupons and coupon codes. Calendars are useful and, with the right design, both attractive and relevant to your customers – which means your customers are likely to prominently display and use your calendars. Based on "page views," calendars are also some of the most cost-effective marketing tools on the planet. With all of these benefits, it would be a shame to miss out on the chance to cash in with calendar marketing. Fortunately, it's not too late for calendar marketing!

Even if you've missed the typical January 1 deadline for calendar distribution, your customers will use your calendars if they're better than the ones they already have. That means printing calendars that feature monthly photos or designs your customers will be proud to display on their walls.

You can print calendars fast, too; all you need is a free calendar template, your photos or designs, and your favorite graphic design software. Open your calendar templates, insert your photos, then save as a print-ready file. You can even get rush printing on your calendars so you can go from design to delivery in just a few days. All that's left to do is get your calendars in customers' hands, which is easily accomplished in-person, at the counter, or via direct-mail.

There's no question calendar printing is an effective way to market your business year-round. Don't worry if you're a little behind schedule – you just need to print a better calendar than your competitors to win valuable wall space. If you're way behind, print 18-month calendars, which allow you to distribute calendars any time of the year.

Do you use calendars to market your business? Share your favorite calendar marketing tips in the comments!

25 Resolutions for Designers, Marketers, and Small Business Owners

Posted: 26 Dec 2014 05:00 AM PST

000326

With 2014 in the rear view and all of 2015 ahead, now is the time to set goals for expanding your reach, connecting with customers, and growing your business. On this matter designers, marketers, and small business owners are entwined; small business owners need marketing to position their brands in the marketplace and good marketing requires great graphic design to successfully communicate brand messages. The following lists 25 resolutions designers, marketers, and small business owners can make to craft more meaningful, powerful communication that compels customers to respond.

1.  Test on mobile

Test every digital marketing campaign on mobile devices before you launch to ensure the customer experience is quick, easy, and fulfilling whether they're on a smartphone, tablet, or laptop.

2.  A/B test everything

Are you getting the best bang for your marketing buck, or are you missing sales because you don't take the time to optimize your design and copy? There's only one way to find out.

3.  Thank your customers every time

If you have repeat business, it can be easy to take your best customers for granted. Express your gratitude for every project to let them know you value their business. Pick up the phone, if possible, send a thank-you card, or thank them in person – simply printing "thank you" on your invoice doesn't count.

000327

4.  Hire a copywriter

See if you can improve the response rate on your marketing materials by outsourcing copy to a professional copywriter. Chances are, the answer is yes.

5.  Try a new font for every project

Don't get lazy with your stable of favorite fonts; branch out and give your designs unique styles by consistently experimenting with new fonts.

6.  Measure social media impact

There's no question social media can help brand your company and promote sales; however, measuring the impact of social media can prove challenging. Seek social media measuring solutions to determine how you really need to invest in social media.

7.  Focus on your best customers

Do you have defined customer profiles for your best customers? If not, make them, then focus your marketing efforts on reaching those who fit those profiles.

8.  Launch a new product or service

Tailor your new product or service to your best customers. It's easy to do that when you…

9.  Ask customers what they need

Customer needs evolve, and the solution you've been selling for the past five or 10 years might need revamped to continue to meet customer needs.

10.  Tell customers what else you do

It's surprising how many small businesses fail to let good customers know their entire product and service offering. All it takes is a simple email with a list of everything you offer to drum up new sales from loyal customers.

11.  Make some videos

You don't need a professional production to push videos on Facebook and your own website; a few quick videos with tips for customers can generate outstanding response. You can even place QR codes on posters, postcards, and other marketing materials that lead customers to your videos through print marketing.

000328

12.  Focus on great content

Forget SEO and focus on writing, designing and shooting great content for your visitors. The best content will always win popularity contests, no matter how the search engines rank them. You can always add SEO elements later.

13.  Go guerrilla

Make a list of ways you can reach customers with cost-effective and attention-getting guerrilla marketing, then try a few ideas and track response.

14.  Read at least one article per day

Whether on design, marketing, or growing businesses, reading one article each day from expert sources can help you discover new tools, tips and ideas for success.

15.  Attend a new trade show

Look for trade shows within your industry or that serve your target customers and be ready to learn what your competitors are doing and what your customers want. Take plenty of business cards to leave with new connections.

16.  Review your payment process

If you accept online payments, give your payment process a full review to see if it's fast and easy for customers. Be sure to see how your payment process works on mobile devices as well.

17.  Update employee training processes

Make training videos for employees to watch so you can train more efficiently; incorporate lessons in branding, customer service, sales tactics, and company information so your employees don't just know how to do their jobs – they also buy in to company philosophy and actively work to promote your products and services.

000329

18.  Cut the fat

Examine your spending and cut any overhead that isn't directly affecting – or is negatively affecting – your bottom line. This includes inert advertising, unnecessary subscriptions, and underperforming employees.

19.  Increase prices

Unless your unique selling proposition is low pricing, you should consider increasing prices to stay ahead of inflation. Great marketing and quality products and services will justify your price increase.

20.  Make a list of things you can delegate

Stop trying to do everything; make a list of things you could potentially delegate, then work on delegating everything on your list, one-by-one.

21.  Try a new marketing idea each quarter

Direct mail, email, outdoor, guerrilla, online – whatever you haven't tried, it's time to see if you can launch a new marketing campaign that yields excellent results.

22.  Figure out where your brand is missing

Examine areas your customers frequent to see if your brand is missing, then fill in the blanks with stickers, posters, flyers, banners, and other marketing tools intended to keep your brand top-of-mind.

23.  Make a $10 million marketing plan

List every way you would market if you had a $10 million budget – would you increase volume for what you already do, or would you invest in new ideas? This is a great way to discover new marketing ideas to try.

24.  Rethink direct mail

Direct mail continues to be one of the most powerful marketing strategies, yet many companies in the digital age have never even tried a postcard marketing campaign, much less a full sales letter package. Research shows modern customers appreciate direct mail more than digital marketing, so you can use it to your competitive advantage.

000330

25.  Partner up

Brainstorm ways you can partner up with non-competing businesses who share your customer base. A car wash might partner with a detailing service for a total auto clean package, for example. In this manner both companies share in marketing expenses, generating double the business for the same investment.

What resolutions do you think designers, marketers, and small businesses should make this year? Let us know in the comments!

Why You Need to Recharge Over Christmas Break

Posted: 23 Dec 2014 05:06 AM PST

One of the reasons many small business owners give for going into business for themselves in the first place is the freedom to enjoy time with family and friends. The Christmas break is perhaps the best annual opportunity for taking free time; however, many business owners spend it working more. This is especially true for retail businesses that thrive on holiday sales; however, tending to your business should not make it impossible to join in the holiday festivities. In fact, if you're a small business it's important for you to slow down and recharge over Christmas break. Here's why.

It's good for your health

Taking a break helps reduce stress, which damages your vital organs and can contribute to sleep disorders, disease and even premature death. Spending time with people you love to be around has a positive impact, not only by removing you from stressful situations but also by making you laugh and smile – which have been shown to have positive effects on health.

It's good for your business

It's funny how we seem to champion those people who constantly have their noses to the grindstone, when science says people who routinely take extended breaks are more creative, more efficient and more productive. Not only should you take several breaks throughout the work day, you should also take several days off at a time. Christmas break provides the perfect opportunity.

Taking a break isn't just about leisure; it also helps you grow and your business grow. When you take a step back it's easier to put your business in perspective, define your goals, and objectively state whether you're on the path to achieve them. If you're not, Christmas break is a great time for brainstorming how to get there.

It's what you really want

Why are you putting long hours in to make your business a success? Because you like working all the time? Hardly. Money? Doubtful, given you don't have time to spend it. Freedom? Yep, and that's why you need to take Christmas break for "you" time. It's what you really want, after all, and one of the major reasons you do what you do every day of the year.

When you take an extended break, you can recharge your body and your mind while enjoying the fruits of your efforts. When you return in the New Year, you'll be better prepared to tackle challenges, have a plan in place for achieving success, and be better-equipped for making important decisions efficiently, productively and creatively.

Do you recharge over Christmas break? Why or why not? Let us know in the comments!

Too Close To Christmas: Can You Make New Year’s Sales?

Posted: 22 Dec 2014 05:00 AM PST

Free Illustration New Year, Tree, Christmas, Holiday - Free Image on Pixabay - -000135-Optimized

I've always been boggled by the fact that Christmas and New Year's are so close together; of course, the authors of the Gregorian calendar could hardly have envisioned the exhaustive succession of holiday parties faced by many modern people when they reformed the Julian calendar more than 500 years ago, much less the motivations of marketers to turn profits. Today, Christmas is a veritable feeding frenzy for marketers; and unless you sell party hats and champagne it would seem New Year's is a lost opportunity in the wake of the biggest spending holiday of the year.

Nothing could be further from the truth. Rather than limit your opportunities for New Year's sales, Christmas actually creates opportunities. You just have to be savvy enough to see them.

Which specific opportunities are available to you depends what type of industry you're in, but consider the following:

  • Post-Christmas is prime time for returns. Can you "steal" returns from your competitors by offering better deals or more desirable products and services?
  • The last week of the year is the last hurrah for many people who intend to start focusing on life changes. How can you help them with their resolutions?
  • Many people give and receive gift cards for Christmas. Can you accept gift card "trade ins" to "steal" competitor business? Or, perhaps offer 10 percent in greater value for competitor gift cards – and do so profitably?
  • Many gifts require accessories to fully enjoy. Video game consoles, home entertainment systems, computers, mobile devices, and Blu Ray players, for example. Can you sell those accessories?
  • Not everyone celebrates Christmas, but everyone enjoys having fun. Can you reach those who do not celebrate Christmas with a dedicated marketing campaign?

As you can see, New Year's isn't too close to Christmas. In fact, it's one of the better-placed calendar holidays because it's poised to take advantage of all the opportunities Christmas creates. How can your business take advantage of New Year's to boost sales?

5 Last-Minute Marketing Tips to Boost Christmas Sales

Posted: 17 Dec 2014 05:06 AM PST

Free Photo Gift, Packaging, Loop, Christmas - Free Image on Pixabay - 402199 - -000127-Optimized

Planning your Christmas marketing campaign early lets you take advantage of last-minute opportunities to boost sales; when most of the work is done and your marketing is on autopilot, you can devote your efforts to a final surge that helps your sales figures reach new heights during the holiday season. The following lists five last-minute marketing tips you can take advantage of to boost Christmas sales.

1.  EDDM postcard marketing

If your company primarily serves local customers, you can attract last-minute shoppers by sending EDDM (Every Door Direct Mail) postcards to every residential address within your zip code. Create a special offer just for last-minute shoppers and promise to help them find the perfect gift. Remind them that time is running out, and they can quickly complete their shopping with you, locally, and not have to worry about shipping delays. Add free or low-cost gift wrapping to make shopping with you even more attractive.

2.  Facebook advertising

Facebook ads can help you reach last-minute shoppers, both locally and globally (provided you're able to offer expedited shipping). Target last-minute shoppers with Facebook ads that drive customers to your website or allow customers to print coupons (or write down coupon codes) good at your local retail location.

3.  Banners

Catch commuting customers will strategically distributed vinyl banners that remind them they have to act fast in order to finish their Christmas shopping. Keep your banner verbiage short and sweet, but make it memorable so customers know how to act fast on your special offer.

4.  Window clings

Last-minute Christmas shoppers crowd malls and shopping districts; get them in your store with bright, attention-getting window clings that promote your special offers or the perfect Christmas gifts for their loved ones. Promise to help them finish their shopping and promote – again – gift wrapping to make your store more attractive. If customers can walk in your door and walk out with gifts ready to place under the tree, you can bet they'll want to buy from you.

5.  Email marketing

Email can be another great way to attract local and global customers to your online shop or brick-and-mortar retail locations. Send emails targeting last-minute Christmas shoppers to your in-house list and consider renting a targeted list to increase your reach.

Keep in mind that last-minute shoppers want speed and convenience. They've put off Christmas shopping, and they want to be able to purchase great gifts fast and easy. Your last-minute Christmas marketing campaigns should emphasize how you can help them accomplish those goals, through one-stop shopping, a great selection for their loved ones (or targeted selections for specific types of customers), and convenience via local shopping, gift wrapping or overnight shipping. Use the strategies listed here to reach your target customers, and you should be able to boost Christmas sales this year.

5 Christmas Gifts That Need Custom Label Printing

Posted: 16 Dec 2014 05:00 AM PST

Free Photo Jam, Preserve, Marmalade, Jelly - Free Image on Pixabay - 19720 - Go-000133-Optimized

The very best Christmas gifts feature a touch of personalization that makes them more meaningful; this is true whether you're giving branded Christmas gifts away to your customers or homemade gifts to family and friends. One great way to add personalization to your Christmas gifts is custom label printing.

You can print custom labels featuring your brand identity, your name, your recipients' names, or even a fun family nickname; your custom labels can also include any photos or artwork you'd like for the ultimate personalized Christmas gifts. Before you can print custom labels, however, you need to know what they're going on. The following lists five Christmas gifts that need custom label printing.

1. Beer and wine

Whether you make your own beer and wine or you want to give custom wine bottles to your best clients, printing custom bottle labels can be a great way to personalize your own unique brews or to commemorate your clients.

2. Homemade recipes

Do you love to give away homemade recipes to your families and friends? Cookie dough mixes, jams and jellies, pies, salsa, and other homemade goodies look great when placed in glass jars and personalized with custom printed labels.

3.  Bagged goods

From special coffee blends to a toy-filled brown paper bag and sandwich-bagged snack mix, custom labels can help personalized your bagged goods and add an extra special touch to your Christmas gifts – especially those that come from the North Pole.

4.  Promotional items

If you give water bottles, frisbees and other promotional items away to your clients as Christmas gifts, add your brand image with custom labels. This practice allows you go buy unique products rather than be limited to the products sold by promotional companies and still lends a branded appeal.

5.  Calendars

Whether you print calendars featuring family members for your loved ones or print calendars featuring your brand for customers, you can augment your calendars with custom labels. Think how fun it would be to print sticker sheets featuring each family member's photo to place on their calendar birthdays, or to create custom holiday and "special date" sticker clients can place on their calendars to remember upcoming events.

No matter what you give for Christmas, it's the thought that counts; with custom label printing, you can make your thoughts more meaningful to your gift recipients.

Imaginative Printing

Posted: 12 Dec 2014 07:00 AM PST

I love seeing all the imaginative ways customers use our printed products. A business card as a punch card, sheet stickers as personalized address labels, posters as calendars, table tents as centerpieces for weddings – all smart ideas.

Backstreets, a Bruce Springsteen fan site, has found a creative use for our beverage coasters. Backstreets printed coasters with striking photographs of attractions in Springsteen’s home state of New Jersey on one side, and the fan site name on the back side. Now there are more than coasters – they are works for art. The results are coasters that are, well, boss.
