What Does Marketing Automation Mean For Small Businesses?

If you operate a small business, you've undoubtedly heard the term "marketing automation" by now. The phrase is both promising and confusing; the promise of being able to automate one's marketing strategy is enticing, yet it seems when you take a closer look nearly everyone has a different take on what marketing automation means. What is marketing automation? What is automated, and who sets the processes up? Does it even work? The following attempts to answer the question "What, exactly, does marketing automation mean for small business?"

What is marketing automation?

In broad terms, marketing automation is any practice that automates a marketing process. Specifically, marketing automation is when you employ the power of software to automatically conduct tasks. Here are some examples of marketing automation:

  • automatically sending emails to customers at different points during the sales cycle
  • automatically tracking and updating contact information
  • automatically segmenting customers into "likely-to-buy" lists (lead scoring)
  • automatically tracking online analytics and providing reports

These are just a few examples; there are dozens or even hundreds of additional tasks and processes performed by marketing automation software. Moreover, the field is still in its infancy; there are hundreds if not thousands of additional tasks that could be automated (more on that shortly).

Why should your small business invest in marketing automation?

Marketing automation software takes the place of manual labor, and as a small business you know quality manual labor – employees and contracted help – can be expensive. When you have relatively simple, yet time-consuming and tedious tasks, you're wasting money paying employees for such menial – yet critical – work when they could be performing tasks to help grow your company.

Let's say you want to launch an email marketing campaign to promote an ecommerce product with the campaign to span five emails over a four-week period. Under traditional circumstances, you would have to:

  • have the emails designed and coded
  • manually add relevant contacts to your email list
  • manually send those emails
  • manually track how many responses you receive (and never know how many emails were opened, bounced, or clicked)
  • manually check for sales and fulfill said sales

As you can see, operating such a campaign is time-intensive if you do it yourself, potentially expensive if you pay an employee to do it. This is where marketing automation comes in: some software, such as InfusionSoft, can handle all of these tasks for you. You spend a few minutes setting up the campaign parameters, and the system handles the rest – and even generates reports to allow you to track campaign efficacy and return on investment.

Time is money, and it's even more critical to the success of the smallest of businesses than large corporations. When every dollar and every minute count, marketing automation can free your time and reduce your marketing investment. That's why small businesses should invest in marketing automation.

What's missing from marketing automation?

As I previously stated, there are hundreds if  not thousands of tasks that could be automated. For example, the vast majority of marketing automation centers around email marketing, although social media is often given weight as well. What about print marketing? Direct-mail print marketing continues to be one of the most powerful marketing strategies on the planet, yet marketing automation software tends to ignore it completely.

Here's what I would love to see in the near future:

  • marketing automation software that performs all the "usual" marketing automation tasks but also incorporates direct-mail print marketing
  • a marketer could choose to send, say, a sales letter or a postcard to a list that's also receiving its email campaigns
  • the marketing automation system handles the list creation, assists in artwork development by providing customizable templates, and sends the print job out for printing and mailing
  • the marketing automation assigns each piece a custom URL for customer response
  • customers land on custom pages automatically generated just for them – including the use of each individual customer's name
  • the marketing automation system then tracks those who respond, gives them lead scores for future marketing use, and tracks purchases and campaign return on investment

Incorporating print into "standard" marketing automation tools could bolster campaigns and make them more powerful than ever, thereby yielding greater profits than ever before.

The future of marketing automation

We're just seeing the early stages of marketing automation and what it can do. In the near future, we will see print integration to marketing automation tools. We'll likely also see channels such as TV and radio added, in addition to a greater emphasis on mobile marketing channels. Small businesses that get on board with marketing automation will be able to market more efficiently – campaigns will be cheaper, yet far more effectively, resulting in greater return on investment and profits than ever before.

Small businesses that do not employ marketing automation, however, risk being left behind as they won't be able to keep up with their more efficient, budget-minded competitors. Marketing automation isn't just a buzzword; rather, it describes a marketing strategy that will undoubtedly become the norm over the next few years. Maintaining a competitive edge means your small business must strive for efficient, profitable operations, and marketing automation is one way you can achieve that end.

5 Tips For Powerful Promotional Calendars

Posted: 29 Oct 2014 05:00 AM PDT

time-273857_640-Optimized

Printing promotional calendars is a great way to get your brand in front of customers 365 days per year. The added value afforded by calendars coupled with the fact that customers use them makes calendars some of the most cost-effective marketing tools you can invest in. If you want to make sure your brand is front-and-center every day of the year to ensure awareness and generate more sales, incorporate the following five tips for powerful promotional calendars into your campaign.

1. Make your calendars fun and relevant

The single best way to print calendars your customers will hang on the wall and use daily is to design them with fun and relevant monthly pictures. Your calendar images will be the most important factor in customers' decisions to display it, so you have to come up with photos that are relevant to both your business and your customers, and that have the "fun factor."  A mechanic might print calendars featuring classic cars, or a pet store might print calendars featuring adorable dogs and cats, for example. Their calendars aren't about their businesses (though they're relevant); they're about what their customers will be proud to hang on their walls.

2.  Include branding on every page

This is a simple tip, though one many companies miss: make sure your brand is prominently featured on every calendar page. This could be as easy as including your logo on your monthly image artwork. The goal is to make sure your company is top-of-mind whenever customers need what you sell.

3.  Add tips and deals

You can also add helpful tips to your artwork each month, as well as monthly specials and coupon codes to help generate direct sales. A hardware store, for example, might print a calendar that features home improvement and maintenance tips each month. October's entry might include a photo of a fun Halloween scene, the hardware's logo, tips on winterizing homes to keep cold air out, and a special offer for, say, window and door sealing kits to keep drafts out of the home. This is a powerful strategy that adds even more value to your calendars and motivates customers to buy.

4.  Include date reminder stickers

You can print a set of fun date reminder stickers to distribute with your calendars. Print sheet stickers that feature themed stickers for birthdays, holidays, weddings, anniversaries, graduations, and other special events so customers can quickly place them on their calendars. Even though they can write information in, stickers will help draw attention to your special dates and will not only be appreciated, but used. They add more value to your calendars and help influence customers to hang, display, and use them.

5.  Distribute before the holidays

Timing is everything when it comes to calendar distribution; you need to give calendars to your customers close enough to the new year that they're ready to hang, but before your competitors beat you to the punch. Your timing might be different based on when your competitors distribute calendars. One local insurance company hand delivers calendars to businesses right before Thanksgiving; then, they follow-up the week before Christmas to offer season's greetings. If they don't see their calendar, they offer another. Local businesses have come to expect their calendars, and because they know the company is coming back, they almost always hang the new editions as soon as they arrive. You don't have to be so aggressive, but understand that getting your calendars in customers' hands at the right time can be critical to your calendar marketing success.

5 Ways To Make Holiday Cards More Meaningful To Customers

Posted: 27 Oct 2014 05:00 AM PDT

Printing holiday cards is a great way to stay connected to customers year-round; holiday cards are universally appreciated and, often, even prominently displayed. The goals of a good holiday card campaign should be to make customers feel appreciated and reinforce your relationship, thereby fostering long-term customer loyalty and repeat sales. The more meaningful your holiday cards, the better they fulfill those goals. To that end, the following lists five ways to make holiday cards more meaningful to customers.

1.  Personalize

The best way to make your holiday cards more meaningful to customers is to personalize them. Make sure your envelopes are addressed to specific customers, not "families" or "current residents." If possible, include a handwritten note inside each holiday card, personalized for each specific customer. You might not be able to do this if you have hundreds of customers, but you can do it for your top 20 to 50 customers. Even employing fonts that mimic handwriting can add a personal touch to your holiday cards.

2.  Say "thanks"

Use holiday cards to express your gratitude to your customers. Make it clear that you know your customers have a choice when it comes to making purchases, and you're proud to have earned their business and look forward to continuing to set the curve when it comes to customer service and quality products, etc. You might consider asking customers to call you with ideas for improving their experience. Doing so demonstrates your dedicated to meeting and exceeding expectations. Of course, you should also wish your customers a happy holiday season.

3.  Give a gift

Send a gift along with your holiday cards to both express your appreciation and to add a personal touch for your customers. Again, you don't have to send gifts to everyone – just to your best customers. The more personalized the gift, the better. For example, if you have a customer who loves the local baseball team, give them a set of tickets to a game. If you have a customer who loves dining out, get them VIP reservations at a hot new restaurant. In this manner, you will be able to reinforce customer relationships and earn lifelong customer loyalty.

4.  Offer a discount

The primary goals of your holiday cards, again, are to express appreciation and reinforce relationships. However, you can also use holiday cards to promote a special VIP-only discount to your best customers. Offer a substantial discount or buy-one-get-one-free coupon or coupon code to give your best customers your best deal and bring them to your store, office, or website to make purchases.

5.  Custom holiday card printing

Reinforce your brand image and your stature in the industry with custom holiday card printing. Skip generic store-bought cards and envelopes, and instead design custom holiday cards featuring relevant holiday images and your brand logo and colors. Opt for premium holiday card and envelope stock, then add classic touches such as custom address labels and envelope seals for optimal branding. This will make your communications seem more important and, thus, more meaningful to customers.

Coasters, Wine Labels and More: PsPrint’s New Products

Posted: 24 Oct 2014 06:00 AM PDT

You tell us what you want to print, and we listen. That’s the deal. Last year, due to popular demand we added uncoated business cards, ultra-thick 16-point paper stock and sheet stickers. This year, we launched a record-number of new products to help you market your business, product or event, including our smooth 15-point velvet paper stock, car door magnets, wine and bottle labels, drink coasters, adhesive banners, EDDM postcards, bumper stickers, business flyers, and window clings and decals.

Pretty long list, right? I didn’t even include all the cool product options and website improvements we added such as additional brochure folding options or our super-handy reorder button. We also created a slew of helpful online tutorials filled with designing and printing tips.

So, for this week’s Hot Off the Press, we are featuring some of our new products in action, including wine and bottle labels, car door magnets and window clings. I really love the beverage coasters for Luna Cafe, which not only feature a nice design, but include a recipe on the back. They added value to their coasters, which increases the chances of their customers holding on to the coasters. It’s easy to do something similar with other printed products such as adding a local sports team schedule on the back of a business card or including a coupon code on your postcard.

Don’t Forget EDDM Postcards For Holiday Marketing

Posted: 23 Oct 2014 05:00 AM PDT

background-20658_640-Optimized

Want a cheap and efficient way to quickly blanket local customers with your holiday deals? EDDM (Every Door Direct Mail) postcards are perfect for reaching every household during the holiday season. Many small business marketers spend countless hours planning their holiday marketing campaigns, complete with direct-mail catalogs, posters and flyers, email, and more; but many overlook the simplicity and power of EDDM postcard marketing for boosting holiday sales. If you want to maximize your holiday marketing, don't forget about EDDM postcards.

Why am I so big on EDDM postcards? Three reasons:

1.  EDDM postcards hit every household, business or both in your selected zip code. That means local marketers can compete toe-to-toe with the big box stores during the holiday season. You don't have to have a well-defined mailing list if your target audience is everyone who lives within driving distance of your location.

2.  EDDM postcard marketing campaigns can be deployed quickly. If you've done your due diligence to plan out your holiday marketing efforts, you can sit back while the marketing essentially takes care of itself. However, there are always opportunities that pop up and you would have taken advantage of them had you known they'd present themselves. EDDM marketing campaigns can be deployed practically overnight, so you can jump on those last-minute holiday marketing opportunities and boost sales.

3.  EDDM postcard marketing is cheap. Postcards are among the cheapest marketing materials to print, and the United States Post Office offers discounted postage rates for EDDM postcards; which means you get the biggest bang for your buck by printing EDDM postcards for holiday marketing.

In addition, EDDM postcards have all the benefits of "regular" postcards – they're delivered directly to your customers, they're tangible, real marketing materials that can make a personal connection, and they have a proven track record of success.

This year, don't forget EDDM postcards for your holiday marketing; rather, make them a part of your overall marketing plan to maximize your return on investment.

5 Reasons to Print Custom Holiday Business Cards

Posted: 22 Oct 2014 05:00 AM PDT

Business card credit Lauren Dickens via Under Construction

Most professionals rarely change-up their business card designs – typically only when the brand has a makeover or the old design has gone stale after several years. Often, we order box after box of business cards with no design changes at all. It seems like a wasted opportunity that such a cheap, yet powerful, marketing tool is so oft-ignored as a means to continually promote different benefits and promotions. When you can order 500 business cards for well under $50, it only makes sense to print seasonal editions. The following lists five reasons why you should print custom holiday business cards.

1.  Get noticed – and remembered

People remember the unusual, the quirky, and the fun. When you print custom holiday business cards – perhaps with your logo "dressed" in a Santa hat or a few holly leaves in the corner – the people you meet and customers you give them to will notice, and they'll think of you first when they want to buy what you sell.

2.  Promote holiday specials

By printing seasonal holiday business cards, you can turn the back into a promotional powerhouse by showcasing your special holiday deals. You can also use a QR code to take potential customers to your online holiday catalog, mobile holiday app or your holiday-infused social media page.

3.  Tell your company's holiday story

People buy from people, and the more human your story, the more likely they'll want to do business with you. You can print your holiday story on the back of your business cards to show customers where you came from -  your roots, which are likely shared with many customers. Big companies employ this strategy all the time. If your company was founded by your great-grandfather and he worked late nights by the light of oil lamp to give his kids an extra special Christmas, tell your customers. If your family engages in charitable holiday activities, tell your customers.

4.  Establish solidarity

People don't just buy from people, they buy from people they identify with. When you print custom holiday business cards, customers who share your passion for a given holiday will identify with you. You'll establish a sense of solidarity that makes customers comfortable doing business with you and lays the foundation for long-term loyalty.

5.  Double as coupons and VIP passes

Finally, custom holiday business cards can be printed to double as time-limited coupons or VIP passes. Coupons can be redeemed in-person or via coupon code, both easy to track for return on investment. VIP passes can also be tracked and are perfect for drumming up holiday business at night clubs and restaurants.

How else can you use custom holiday business cards to connect with customers and increase holiday business? Share your thoughts in the comments!

Why Window Clings Make Perfect Seasonal Holiday Marketing Tools

Posted: 21 Oct 2014 05:00 AM PDT

window

Many of us decorate our homes with window clings for the holidays, but have you ever considered window clings as seasonal holiday marketing tools? The following details why window clings make perfect seasonal marketing tools.

Window clings command attention

You can create custom-designed window clings to command attention for your storefront and promotions. This allows you to design and print window clings for specific holidays to draw customers in: Halloween, Christmas, Valentine's Day and more. Your window cling designs can feature traditional holiday themes or unique creative graphics that differentiate your business from competitors.

Window clings are repositionable and resuable

The great thing about window clings is they represent a one-time marketing investment that can be used seasonally, over and again, for years. Print window clings this year, and you can use them next year and the year after. Static window clings can be reused in this fashion and also repositioned so you can test which placement brings in the most customers.

Adhesive window clings aren't reusable, but they can be repositioned five times before their adhesive breaks down. This makes them perfect for testing placement. In addition, the enhanced strength of adhesive window clings means they can also be affixed to walls, doors, and even floors. Try static and adhesive window clings together for a coordinated marketing campaign that gets noticed and motivates sales.

Window clings are cheap to print

Window clings can be printed in various sizes and in small batches of just 25 pieces, which makes them a cheap investment for holiday marketing – especially when you consider that static window clings can be used for years. Print window clings for your storefront, vehicles, mirrors, and more to promote your brand, products, and services this holiday season.

5 Benefits of Custom Envelope Sealers

Posted: 20 Oct 2014 05:00 AM PDT

seaslers

Do you print custom envelope sealers for your direct-mail sales letters and greeting cards? Companies who print custom envelope sealers know the big benefits afforded by such small stickers, and if you're not using custom envelope sealers you're missing out on those benefits. The following lists five benefits of customer envelope sealers you should consider when it comes to branding and marketing.

1.  Powerful branding

Custom envelope sealers designed with your company logo, colors, or other identifying marks lend themselves to your overall branding efforts. When your communications arrive with custom-designed envelope sealers, you're making a statement about your brand that will be noticed by your recipients, otherwise known as your customers.

2.  Favorable perceptions

Powerful branding isn't about being vain, it's about attention to detail. Customers notice when you take the time to address the small things, and custom envelope sealers are representative of your attention to details. That kind of focus suggests you'll pay just as much attention to your customers, who will tend to have more favorable impressions of your company when your communications arrive with custom envelope sealers.

3.  Motivate more opens

Custom envelope sealers can increase your open rate by influencing favorable perceptions and also by intriguing customers with the benefits of finding out what's inside. An insurance company might, for example, print envelope sealers that promise to show customers how to save on their car insurance – all they have to do is open the envelope.

4.  Promotional capabilities

Custom envelope sealers can also help you begin your sales letter promotions before recipients even open the envelopes. For example, envelope sealers can be printed to read "50% OFF coupon – inside!" This and similar copy will influence customer perception and motivate opens as soon as they see it in their mailbox.

5.  Easy sealing

Finally, envelope sealers make it super easy to, well, seal your envelopes. No more licking, no more pasting – just close your envelopes and slap the sticker on. This makes envelope sealers perfect for sending a lot of sales letters or greeting cards at a time, especially if you're taking the time to personalize your communications for your best customers.

Custom return address labels not only  make correspondence preparation easier, they also make correspondence more personal and, if you own or operate a small business, they enhance your brand presence. Return address labels are easy to design and print; simply download a free template, craft your design in your favorite graphics editing program, then send your artwork to the press. With such simplicity, there's no excuse for not leveraging the benefits of custom return address labels to your advantage. The following details why you should print custom return address labels.

They're more personal

If you like to use stationery for correspondence customer return address labels can complete your stationery set by offering a personalized touch on the outside of your envelopes. Like the rest of your stationery, when you print custom labels you can infuse your personality, attitude, passions and themes into the design. Custom return address labels can embody your character, and your recipients will know at a glance that a letter is from you when they see your custom labels. They're also perfect for embedding the holiday spirit into your greeting card envelopes and invitations.

They enhance branding

Savvy marketers know how important it is to cultivate a powerful brand in order to stay top-of-mind with customers. Attention to the details is one way great brands remain relevant, and custom address labels printed with your logo, colors, and other brand elements are the perfect finishing touches for your custom communications.

They make addressing easy

Custom address labels also make addressing envelopes easy; no more tediously handwriting your return address on dozens of envelopes, and no more trying to get your desktop printer to cooperate with envelope printing. With custom return address labels, you simply peel and stick your return address on envelopes fast and easy.

So, do you print custom return address labels?  Why or why not? Let us know in the comments!

30 Halloween Marketing Ideas

Posted: 15 Oct 2014 05:00 AM PDT

Want to scare up some business this Halloween? You don't have to sell candy or costumes to get in on the fun – no matter what type of business you operate, you can use the Halloween holiday to earn excellent exposure for your business and brand, and even motivate sales, with the following 30 Halloween marketing ideas.

1.  Halloween catalogs

If you're in the retail industry, a direct-mail Halloween catalog can be just the thing to spur sales this October. You don't have to sell Halloween things, just offer Halloween deals.

2.  Costume contest

Bring customers into your store or have them generate social media content on Facebook with a costume contest.

3.  Scavenger hunt

Hide a gift card near a public landmark, snap a photo, and post it on social media for a fun and customer-friendly Halloween/trick-or-treat scavenger hunt.

4.  Halloween postcards

Promote your Halloween specials with direct-mail postcards, which can be targeted to your best customer demographics or sent to every door within a defined area.

5.  Pumpkin carving workshop

Invite customers in for a pumpkin carving workshop led by a local expert. The idea is perfect for kids and parents alike, and allows you the opportunity to network and market face-to-face. Get a double dose of marketing by placing photos on social media.

6.  Attend events

Zombie walks, Halloween concerts, fall festivals, and Oktoberfests all present opportunities to market your products and services. Be sure to give every booth visitor a take-away: brochures, business cards, stickers, booklets and flyers.

7.  Greeting cards

Send personalized greeting cards to your best customers to wish them an exciting Halloween or invite them to an event you're hosting or attending.

8.  Trick Or Treat handouts

You can hand out branded bags, glow sticks and stickers before trick or treating; then, become a trick-or-treat destination yourself with candy and coupons.

9.  Decorate your storefront
